File Installation

Hey I just recently got my Ubuntu system set up on my computer and i started 
downloading programs off the internet to install but i cannot figure out how 
to install the programs.

When i looked online to see if they could tell me how to install the 
programs, the commands they listed did not work. so i ask, what commands 
should i use and how do i install programs on Ubuntu
