Fun with upgrading - X not working

So, I finished dist-upgrading.

X fails to start; I'm told that there are screens, but they don't have
a valid configuration - this is after running a reconfigure on
xerver-xorg.

Also, after I enter my username - but *before* I'm prompted for a
password - I'm given this:

configuration error - unknown item 'QUOTAS_ENAB' (notify administrator)

(And then the same line, but with NOLOGIN_STR, ENV_HZ, PASS_MAX_LEN,
CHFN_AUTH, and CLOSE_SESSIONS.

Anyone out there know what's going on?
