I highly recommend learning to program with:

The DrScheme environment is available in the Ubuntu Universe repository.

Don't be put off by the fact that it teaches using the Scheme language.
Everything you learn from it is directly applicable in any programming
language, and learning Scheme first from this book will make it much
easier to learn other languages in the future.
