Make sure your player is using Xv (as opposed to bare X11) for display.
gstreamer-properties should configure this for totem, or
editing /etc/mplayer.conf and changing the "vo=x11" line to "vo=xv"

I play DVDs (and many divx-encoded videos) on my fiance's P3-900 laptop
without major issues using totem-xine.
