Which wine version worked properly on sid?

I've gotten wine running on many different distros, but each time I
had to forget all about the "official" packages for the distro and
just install from source. There's a reason for the existence
of /usr/local, and this unfortunately is one of them.

Wine seems to advance and regress considerably between versions, and
overall the quality is similar to a CVS snapshot. True to form,
sometimes it doesn't even compile.

The best advise I can give is to download the latest version, compile
and see if it works. If not, download the version that worked
properly on sid, rinse, repeat. Check the errors carefully, and make
full use of the WINEDEBUG channels. Winetools sets the following libs
to (native,builtin): setupapi, setupx, wininet

If this still doesn't help, then one by one install versions earlier
than 0.9.9 till you find one that works.

Good luck. :-)
