That should be taken care of for you just by installing either the gdm
or kdm packages.  Either is a dependency of the respective
K/Ubuntu-desktop package.



I would suggest that your problem lies elsewhere.



What error do you get when you run



sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart

?
