Lagging sound in MPG

Hi there.

When I rip DVD tracks to MPEG, the sound always lags a little. Sometimes
it's very noticeable, anything up to a half a second. It's always
behind, never ahead. 

This is using mplayer OR totem. I've tried mplayer's "autosync" option,
but that doesn't seem to make much of a difference, if any.

What I've found in Google suggest that I should twiddle a PCM interrupt
rate, but where and how I do that is not clear to me, and it seems a bit
drastic.

Is there a cure for this?
