Some module questions on new dapper installation

I upgraded my system from breezy to dapper a couple of weeks ago. It took
no time to get everything up and going again, but there are still a couple
of annoyances that I would like to resolve.

The first is the PCMCIA wireless card. It works OK, but I have to go
through a couple of unnecessary steps to get it to do so. In my old
breezy installation my wireless card was eth0 since I have the Ethernet
card disabled in the bios. After my upgrade my system started detecting
it as wifi0. Although this name is a bit more accurate, and I don't mind
it, I couldn't get it to work using this name. I found that using the
following sequence of actions I could get it to work the way it used to:

1) Plug in the card
2) Unplug the card
3) Run the following commands

  sudo rmmod hostap_cs
  sudo rmmod hostap

4) Plug in the card
5) Run the commands under 3) again

Now the card is detected as eth0 and everything works fine.

Is there an easy way to avoid the above actions?

The next two were problems before the upgrade to dapper and so are
unrelated to that. They are related to the fact that I run a custom
kernel.

Second, is that I get a
number of errors when I reboot about modules that aren't found. All the
modules I need are being loaded. I'm using a custom kernel so many of the
modules that used to be used are not anymore. Is there somewhere I can
rid myself of these messages?

Third, I would like to have the Ubuntu splash screen on boot up, just like
I would if I were using a standard kernel. Is there anyway I can get this
to work?

Thanks,
