Thunderbird Problem

If Thunderbird can read the local mail files (i.e. It displays the mail for 
you to read) then the file is not corrupted.

How big are your mail files?  Thunderbird stores all the mail for each 
folder in one large mbox file.  When it gets big, it can slow things down.  

How long did you wait before you assumed Thunderbird wasn't going to check 
mail?
