To be clear, marking the Windows parition active or simply running the
command 'fdisk /mbr' from DOS (Windows) isn't risky in the least. The
worst that can happen is that you'll end up able to boot only Windows
as you'll overwrite GRUB with a DOS boot loader (that can only boot
Windows), but this situation is very very easily recitified. In this
case, the machine was not booting at all so there wasn't any danger in
doing it (and in fact, there was danger of data loss in not doing it).
