x freezes after last dapper kernel upgrade

I'm with you there, I've got the same issues.  I am trying to get a k7 
kernel (I have a dual core AMD) to work (and I can only get the new one 
through Synaptic), and it locks up my computer as well  Have you already 
done a memtest?  Reboot into failsafe using the same kernel, just search 
through arbitrary files in the command line and then if your computer 
hasn't locked up, try and restart X.  That's my next step this 
afternoon, since my kernel update came with a whole bunch of Gnome 
updates as well.
