I also have an i915. Once I upgraded to Dapper, I did not need
915resolution. You may want to try without it, and see if you can get it
working without the hack...
I have a multi-monitor and single-monitor xorg.conf that I switch back
and forth between using a script. I've attached the multi-monitor xorg
for your reference. I have different screens set up for the lcd and the
external display. I have a pretty old CRT that I've been checking this
out with, so it can't even handle 1024x768! That is why those lines are
commented out.
You may want to try removing 915resolution, and running
'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg' to see if it will reconfigure properly.
