printer not working dapper install

I found that, (to make a long story short) the upgrade to 6.06 includes
an upgrade of cupsys-driver-gimpprint, and removes the
cupsys-driver-gimpprint-data package. The Dapper repo doesn't have an
upgrade to the cupsys-driver-gimpprint-data package and when you update
cupsys-driver-gimpprint, the data package is no longer compatible with
it, and consequently is removed. (I don't remember how I found this out
or discovered that it was relevant, but...) So now you have
cupsys-driver-gimpprint without the data package. And for some reason,
no printer. I added the Breezy cd-rom to my repo list and downgraded to
the Breezy version of cupsys-driver-gimpprint and reinstalled
cupsys-driver-gimpprint-data, and now the printer works. So that's cool
for now. What I don't understand is why it upgraded gimpprint if
itcauses the printer not to work. What I found out when I looked at the
info for the cupsys-driver-gimpprint upgrade was as follows: This
is a transitional package to migrate existing users of
cupsys-driver-gimpprint to cupsys-driver-gutenprint (its successor). It
may be safely removed after upgrading. I would assume that
gutenprint is somehow supposed to be better that gimpprint, (at
least it would seem that way from my limited perspective) but I prefer
a system that actually allows me to use my printer. Is there something
I need to know about this transition to gutenprint? I wouldn't mind
upgrading if it's an improvement. I would like to know how to
make the upgrade work, if I can.
But in the meantime, I'm using the Breezy version of gimpprint along
with its data package.
