I guess the installer uses the linux-386 image just like the installer on
the Desktop ad the alternate cd? That would explain why the installer boots
but yourinstalled system does not. Maybe boot your system with the install
cd and use the rescue mode to chroot into your system? Then install
linux-386.
You probably can do this on a fresh install too, by switching consoles and
chrooting into the target system after you install but just before you
reboot.
