experiences with RAID 6

without knowing your exact situation i would recommend raid 1+0 as a
good compromise between performance and availability.

with the price of IDE disks falling all the time a 4-disk setup can
give a lot of bang for your buck (4 discs = 2 mirrored raid 0 arrays,
can loose 1 disc from each pair and remain functional)

if you're at all concerned about the availability of your data (ie
production environment) i would also seriously recommend considering a
(proper - 3ware for IDE, LSI etc for SCSI) hardware raid card.
