totem xine in firefox error

I have been installing and uninstalling firefox plugins all day long 
trying to get the ability to play *.mov files on the internet. I finally 
got something other than "Totem could not play 'fd://0'":

The xine engine failed to start.
No demuxer found - stream format not recognised.

I have no idea what a demuxer is nor where I would find one in a form to 
satisfy the "xine engine".

Mplayer and VLC both play downloaded *.mov files.  I would be satisfied 
if I could find some way to tell Firefox to simply invoke one of these 
external apps.

Any help is greatly appreciated.
