I'm actually using the xine back end.  I probably should have mentioned
this.  I've also found it to work better than gstreamer.  Actually,
gstreamer uses too much CPU for my laptop to really view any movies at
all.  The xine back end allows most movies to play OK.

No, I haven't.  I don't have all the KDE stuff installed.  I'd like to
avoid installing it, but if that might help, I'll give it a shot. 

Unfortunately I can't seem to get to the repositories right now.
