How to open a port?

Ubuntu by default uses no firewall because it has a policy of not
running any services that listen on ports to the outside. This means
that any service you install/configure to listen will have the ports
open automatically.

If you installed a firewall, then how to open ports depends on the
firewall.

I suspect the reason you don't get an X connection is because X is
configured to not listen on outside ports as per the policy given above.
You need to reconfigure X. This should do it: start
System/Administration/Login Window. On the tab Security, uncheck 'Deny
TCP Connections to Xserver'.
