The good news on MOL is that with dapper/ 6.06 you no longer need to
compile your own modules - the pre-compiled and packaged modules appear to
work quite well here. I had sound issues with MOL on my iBook G4 using
breezy, but these appear to have been fixed on dapper ( more or less -
sound is still a bit scratchy, but usable).

This is with OS-X though - I don't know about issues with OS-9
