I don't know about kernel changes and such - I have never used vmware.
But the OP specifically asked about ways to avoid using the script, and
this might be one. Assessment of usefulness is up to the vmware users :)

Checkinstall usually at least is very handy to try out stuff, because it
takes the hassle out of removing stuff manually from /user/local if
there is no "uninstall" make target.
