When you upgrade a distro, there's always a chance that it won't go
perfectly. I think I've always had to fix something for every upgrade
I've ever done -- dating back to the Red Hat 5.x days. How risky it is
for you has a lot to with how much fiddling you've done, including 3rd
party repositories, proprietary software, config hacks to get things
working "just right", or even obscure universe packages playing a
critical role on the box.
I always budget about 8 hours of work or so for upgrades. My laptop is
on Dapper, but my wife's computer and my old laptop-turned-emergency
server are still on Breezy, and will stay there until at least weekend,
when I can dedicate a day (each) to upgrading them. That said, I was
able to get a functioning Dapper on my (HP zv52xx) laptop pretty
quickly. Some other things (namely decent looking fonts) took a bit
longer, but that didn't impede using it for day-to-day stuff.
Before you upgrade, I suggest some casual browsing (if not outright
searching) of the forums, and this list, for explicit problems with
hardware or software configurations you have. That could save a lot of
time and headache.
Good luck,
Rich
