Question about monitor refresh settings

While I am able to manually set my monitor's refresh rates manually in
xorg.conf, I have noticed that many distributions have a database of
monitors that one can select while setting up X.  Is it a Debian/Ubuntu
thing that prevents inclusion of this database?  I ask because I inputted my
monitors refresh settings and X automatically sets 72 Hz. for the refresh
rate.  I would like to bump it up to 85.
