Okay, fixed!
Turns out all I had to do is go in the BIOS and reset to default
settings. However (!?) :
1. I never touched the bios settings before, its a new computer and
2. The bios on the Sony Viao SZ160 is extremely minimalist and has *no*
control whatsoever over CPUs, hyperthreading, dual cores or whatever.
All it does is provide bios passwords, a boot order and some LCD and
drive settings.
Anyways, hope this can save someone the trouble one day.
