ubuntu-desktop is just a meta package, it actually doesn't contain any
actual packages just refers to other packages and keeps dependancy on
them. I always get rid of it first off when I upgrade (reinstall) to
the newer version of ubuntu, mainly because it has dependancies to apps
that I hate an think are a waste of time (Totem, gnome-btdownload, etc)
It even links to the games. You won't break anything by installing it.
You just need to reinstall it when you do a distro upgrade.

The other thing I was wondering was doing that, well it link the
lock-screen in the gnome-panel and menu to xscreensaver?
