Best way to pull a "side-grade"?

Have I just coined a term? Anyway, after my on-line upgrade this
morning from 5.10 to 6.06, (the smoothest upgrade I've ever
experienced! -- after running RH, Mandrake, and SuSE) I noticed an XFCE
version of Ubuntu. Is there a way to shift "sideways" from the Gnome
version to the XFCE version without doing a clean install? I suspect
the answer will be no, but maybe someone a lot smarter than I am has
figured out how to do it...
