My experience (Breezy and Dapper) has been that you don't have to mount
usb volumes yourself, and don't even need them to be in /etc/fstab.
However, it is sometimes erratic (works for a while, then stop working
and you don't have a clue). Quite often, they mount the first time, but
if you umount them, unplug them then plug them again a while later, they
don't mount automatically.
I really don't know how to solve it anyway. It's like old snes
cartridges, you end up blowing on them, brushing them on your jeans, and
pray while you plug them.
