mdadm help - (Dapper Server)

I have an 8-drive software array running on a /dev/md0 software array.
On older slackware linux servers, I always had a "raidhotadd /dev/md0
/dev/hdX1" option to replace a failed drive.  I've not been able to
figure out the safest way to get this to happen with the mdadm tools.

Anyone have any expert advice for replacing a failed drive?
