gnome+xfce

I have been running Dapper since Alpha and am finally upgrading to the
latest packages right now. I am a little short of RAM (256 Megs) and
now that I have free bandwidth once again, I was thinking if it would
be alright to install xubuntu-desktop alongside the default Gnome. I
remember how painful I found having to see KDE and Gnome apps in the
same Red Hat Menu on Fedora, and I really don't want that kind of
thing again.
Are there any specific issues with having them together? Or would I be
better off getting rid of Gnome before getting XFCE? Is there a way to
make sure that XFCE and Gnome don't affect each other?
Also, is XFCE in any way inferior to Gnome in terms of what
applications I can run? I have never really used it before.
