exim4 and ssmtp woes

Greetings all,

Issue - Ubuntu Dapper user, highly disenchanted with Evolution and lack of
spam filtering. Moved to mutt - previously working under old Debian box
using exim4 split configuration.

Problem - Using 3 different email addresses (but only one smtp account for
sending mail) I was unable to get exim4 to receive mail on mutt - apart from
the main account. The mail was sent, but fetchmail was unable to send it to
mutt folders - OK to receive on evolution and thunderbird. I looked at the
following issues:

1. fetchmail config
2. procmail config
3. exim4 exchanged for ssmtp

Results - ssmtp was not to my liking, so I reinstalled exim4 using synaptic.
Broken. There was a problem with configuring because exim4-base had an
error. Re-installed ssmtp - and another config problem (checked the error
shown in the config- file for ssmtp, and there was no error. The error
message suggested that a false variable '#' was present, but the indicated
place showed the correct variable '$' .... not sure what this signifies.

Re-installed exim4 several times - alwas the same issue. Decided to remove
exim4 by deleting the /etc/exim4 directory and re-installing. Install seemed
to go OK, but when I go into /etc/exim4 there is no template or config file,
going into config/ directory the acl/ and other directories are shown, but
empty.

Questions

1. Where can I find the unsplit exim-conf file to use as a template to
rebuild these directories?
2. Should I delete all exim4 and reinstall from source?
3. Why does synaptic tell me the install is OK, when it is not?

Any and all suggestions are most welcome!

All the best

Brian
