How can I just turn off the screensaver and auto-suspend?

there is no need to uninstall xscreensaver, the packages xscreensaver-gl
and rss-glx contain the 3d screensavers, leave xscreensaver and the
xscreensaver-data (2d) packages installed ;)
and dont forget to reinstall xubuntu-desktop if you upgrade to the next
release in october :)
