Ubuntu Dapper (6.06) Install fails on cdrom open, kernel panic -- please help

You believe rightly, however I did try this option and it yields exactly 
the same problem. In either case it does not seem to get passed the same 
point, i.e. 'mounting root file system...' or 'cdrom: open failed' / 
'<0>Kernel panic - not syncing: Fatal exception in interrupt'.
