Hi there.
I just tried out network manager on my laptop+breezy.
cleared everything bar lo out of /etx//network/interfaces.
- installed network-manager
- NetworkManager and NetworkManagerDispatcher now running
- nm-applet nowhere to be found. Not in the selection for "Add to
panel". Ran /etc/cron.daily/slocate, found /usr/sbin/nm-applet.
- ran nm-applet by nad as root, could get onto wired and unwired nets,
but it took a long time to "find" them.
- but no DNS! NetworkManager apparently starts BIND, but I had another
nameserver running and the NM one couldn't work. Silly -it shoulda
checked!
OK, decided to deinstall NM. Too slow, does silly stuff (WTF does it
need to monkey with my DNS for?!?)
- said "complete removal" in synaptic, seemed to go OK.
- except everything stiil running, OK, start killing. Everything
killable except nm-applet! Kill it, it starts again. Unablew to find out
why. Exit X, restart, applet gone.
- unable to figure out how NM started! Not in /etc/init.d.
So" Is NM any better in dapper? What starts NM? Where is nm-applet after
install. How can I get it into a panel automatically?
Regards, K.
