Doing a "man route" at a terminal window should bring up the manual for the
command "route" for you to read (up arrow and down arrow to scroll).  The
gateway I am thinking of is the specific device connected to the internet
(it's IP address in particular - host name nice too if available).  Through
route you can set up the "default gateway" the machine will look to for
connection to the internet (or other networks).  DHCP, if is is available,
should set this up, if not you will need to find it by another means (see
how the other OSs set themselves up).
