There are many possibilities, the most probable being that the
linux-$arch metapackage was not installed, thus was not updated, and
thus did not pull in the newer linux-image-2.6.15-2[3|5|6]-$arch package.

Non-Ubuntu-provided linux-image* packages being installed would also
cause the symptom described above, yes.

snd-emu10k1's emu10k1_main.c (kernel-space) contains the pci ids. The
user-space pci id file is for user-space programs (e.g., lspci).
