dapper upgrade no sound

Sounds like this poster is off in left field with respect to sound
problems. AFAIK, alsa has always defaulted to mute, irritating but
true. However, there are plenty of real problems with sound and LTS
6.06, such that I despair that I will ever have a working sound card
again. It would be nice to know that developers are actually working
on some of these problems. Interestingly enough, it's not just a
Ubuntu problem. I getthe same (total lack) of results on Debian Etch.
