Slow VMware over X11 performance on Dapper upgrade

I normally run VMware over X11 to a remote machine ssh'd into the Ubuntu
host. On Breezy this worked fine and was practically no different than
sitting at the machine running VMware. With the upgrade to Dapper this
has changed. Now the VMware guests repaint the screen slowly (like VNC
slow; unusable). This is the exact same hardware, same version of
VMware, the only difference is the Dapper install.
I can dual boot between Breezy and Dapper and see the difference. On
Breezy VMware over X11 runs at native speed, on Dapper it's repainting
slow like VNC.
Anyone have any idea what is going on? Could this have something to do
with the switch to Xorg 7.0? Dapper is using 7.0 while Breezy uses
6.8.2, correct?
Seems strange...
Thanks!
