gcc libraries

I'm new to linux and have recently installed vmware and ubuntu. 

After installing gcc and trying to compile some simple c programs, I 
find that the "devel" libraries and headers are missing from my 
installation (though trawling through the net, I gather they're supposed 
to be automatically installed). The packages I'm looking for would be

glibc-static-devel-2.3.4
glibc-2.3.5
glibc-devel-2.3.5

Can anyone help please?
