And, as always with Linux, there is another alternative - NFS.
Basically, you need to have portmap and nfs running, and then you
define permissions in /etc/exports. NFS can be a little tricky with
firewalls. I don't know whether Debian/Ubuntu by default restrict nfs
operations to known ports or whether they allow the native NFS
behavior of using random ports.
