 How to increase resolution after installation on iBook?

Hello;

I am VERY new to Linux and need an explanation of how to set the resolution of my iBook (g3, 14.1" screen, ATI video). I have installed from both the "official" CD as well as the alternate and always have the same problem - the resolution can only be set to 640 x 480. I know the screen does at least 1024 x 768 and I'd like to be able to set it. If I use the GUI (system > prefs > screen res.) to set the resolution, the only choice is 640x480.

The main hassle is not so much the low res, but the that many dialog boxes are not fully displayed and being new to this, I have no idea what the options are. I cannot even do any updates because there are choices that aren't visible and I get caught in a loop, coming back to the main screen all the time.

Thanks!

tj
