This may help.

Basically (this is the quick summary!)...

install networkmanager, nm-applet and wpasupplicant
Disable your wireless (and wired if you want network manager to handle
it as well) from /etc/network/interfaces
restart network manger, and load nm-applet within gnome and it should "work"
