Laura, did you install off the Desktop or Server CD?  The Desktop one
does not install an ssh server (or indeed any network services at all)
because the target audience (end users, ie; network clients) do not
need servers of any kind installed[1].  They do, however, need clients
to access network services (hence the ssh client being installed).

The Desktop CD is aimed at providing an end user productivity desktop
system, and it does this very well (with office applications, email,
web browsing, etc).  It's not designed to be a "server" out of the
box.  This mode is easily added to the system via the package
management tools, obviously.
