Ubuntu is not free.

If you HAVE a machine that is running an unsupported version of Windows
(say 98, or Millenium) then you might want to upgrade it. Windows XP
probably won't be an option.
I have an old Sony laptop. It was built at the time of 98SE. Windows XP
doesn't come with Jog Dial drivers... and Sony has no drivers for that
machine for Windows XP... and there is NO WAY I will continue to use
Windows 98...
So logical choice was Linux... and, in particular, Ubuntu, which, on
this 466 MHz machine with 8GB disk and 320 MB RAM behaves quite well
enough to do some work on the move.
So... I *WANTED* to use Linux, but *DID NOT* have the choice of
hardware. It happens, in fact, here, that Linux had nice support for the
NeoMagic graphics chip (that XP didn't) and for the Jog Dial... so I am
happy with this machine running Linux, and with the fact that Ubuntu
came, out of the web, with the drivers supporting it.
