vmware not behaving

hi i get these errors when trying to open a vertual machine. i
installed vmware player from the ropes & it was complaing about
overwriting a file that already excisted, so i jsut said go ahead.
i followed the steps on this page

installed Qemu from the repos as well. im using dapper.

these are the errors i get when i double click the WindowsXPPro.vmx icon

i checked & there is no /dev/vmmon so i uninstalled vmware, &
downloaded the sause from the web site. when i try intall it it tells
me,

A previous installation of VMware software has been detected.

Failure

Execution aborted.

any help pls
