Do you by any chance use procmail? The following, in my .procmailrc, spares me
the sight of any long lines, regardless of the clumsiness of originating mail
clients:


   :0Bbfw                           # Fold long lines (>80 col.) at a space:
   * ...........................................................................
   | fold -s

For your case, drop 8 dots, and add --width=72 to the fold command.

It's often easier to apply rose tinted glasses, than beating sundry authors
into submission. ;-)
