I'm using Dell servers with Dell CERC PATA RAID cards at 2 clients.
The machines are actually running SME Server, not Ubuntu, but SME is
Red Hat 7.1 with additions; if they work on it, they'll work on most
things. Linux sees them as ALI MegaRAID cards and thinks they're SCSI
disks, but it all works fine - it uses the hardware RAIDs perfectly
(they are simple mirrors) but it can actually see the individual
drives for diagnostic purposes.
In the past I have mainly used Adaptec kit for RAID cards, but that was on SCSI.
3ware also have a good reputation for Linux compatibility with GPL drivers.
