Since you said you didn't install it yourself, but seem safe enough to try it,
may I suggest you re-install the whole thing?
Before that, you may want to try the liveCD to test the above steps of network
configuration, so that you make sure it will work after you have the trouble
of backup up your data, reformatting and reinstalling everything you need.
