Strange Sound Problems

Hi,

Sometimes I have problems in using sound applications like rhythmbox or
totem. I posted about this before, but at the time of my first posting I
thought it was a specific rhythmbox problem. But now I think it might be
a general isssue. The problems are:

(1) Rhythmbox don't play songs. If I choose a song an try to play it,
the progress slider just keeps standing at 0:00 and even if I drag it to
a position in the middle of the song it always jumps back.

(2) totem doesn't start. It just shows up a message like "Totem could
not startup. Could not open resource for writing.

Other sound applications like xine still work fine. So I don't think
it's a problem of my audio configuration, but I suspect there is some
process blocking a ressource. Unfortunately I am not sure which
ressource is blocked and so I am not able to identify the process. I
tried lsof /dev/dsp and lsof /dev/audio but both commands didn't show
any processes. So until now I have to reboot in those situation (which I
hate).

This problem doesn't occur regulary and I haven't found a reason for it.
I first suspected watching flash movies with firefox might be the reason
(I already tested different values for FIREFOX_DSP in
/etc/firefox/firefoxrc) but I weren't able to reproduce the problem.

Can anyone with some deeper knowledge of Gnome, Rhythmbox, Totem or esd
help me and give me a hint for analysing this issue?

Thanks, Jochen
