I can relate to your frustration. I started with an Apple 2c back in the
 80's and then in 88 move to a PC. Advanced through Windows 3.0, 3.1, 95
and 98. Right after Windows 95 was released my son inlaw turn me on to
Red Hat. I duel booted for several years because I couldn't get the
network to work. It wasn't until I started researching via mailing list
that I learned I had a winmodem and in those days they didn't work with
linux. Once I got the right modem I dumped windows and have not looked
back. I've used dial-up, cable and currently using ADSL with no
problems. Most linux distro will connect right out of the box now a
days. When they don't it can be nerve racking with loss sleep. From what
I can gather from reading your posts.

1. Someone else installed your system
2. You have the live CD I'm guessing 6.0.6

What I'm about to suggest, some people may disagree with but if you have
a working network on the live CD. Just click the install icon on your
desktop and re-install your system. With the live CD there is only 5 or
6 clicks until you have a full installed system.
