A-ha!

Google is your friend! I googled for my error message : "Unlink after 
no-IRQ?  Controller is probably using the wrong IRQ." and found the 
following page : http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=89266

I tried the workaround, which is to type : sudo modprobe -r ehci_hcd and 
it worked.

Now... this post on the forum dates back to Nov 2005. Shouldn't it have 
been identified as a bug and fixed?
