Such a patch might be needed. Having never been particularly
unhappy with the speed of OOorg on Linux (it just works like it
works), I now did the ultimate comparison. ;-)

I am aware that the hardware is slightly in favour of linux but
who says we should be fair? ;-)))

This is what I found for starting writer from Klick2showdocument:
Kubuntu Dapper with Kernel 686 on PIV 2800 with 2GB of RAM:
10 sec

Win XP Home on Celeron 2600,
"allinone_cheapest_available_desktop_motherboard" with 512 MB
of RAM and "smallest_available_harddisk: 12 sec

So I will not install windows on my PIV to prevent unhappy
OOorg starttime-feelings. ;-))

However:
Apart from the usual "windos/linux is
better" discussions, I cannot see any reason why Openoffice
should be quicker a startup.

Even if it were 30 seconds, what
does this say in relation to an eight or twelve hour workday?
Especiallly if we consider that the guy in front of
the keyboard is by far the slowest component of the computer,
at least as long as we discuss the usage of a full blown Office
Suite.
